Common Roof Tile Mistakes & How to Fix Them

Many people will make mistakes when replacing their roof tiles, and because your roof is integral to the security of your property, roof mistakes can lead to serious problems.

Here are a few of the common roofing mistakes you need to avoid, and how to fix them.

Hiring an unlicensed contractor

If you need major roof repairs and you want to save money, it can be tempting to go with the cheapest option, but that’s not always a good idea and can lead to further roofing issues in the future.

Hiring a contractor who is not licensed may seem like the cheaper and easier option, but it can be a huge mistake. Unlicensed contractors are often under-qualified for the job they’re doing and there have been cases where these contractors take money from customers without ever completing any work on their property.

Always make sure your roofing company is accredited and if you have been let down by an unlicensed contractor, it’s even more important that you spend time researching a professional roofing company with a good reputation and excellent reviews.

Misdiagnosing a leak

There are many ways that you can identify a leak in your roof but if you’re not experienced, you might end up misdiagnosing a leaky roof.

It may have started somewhere totally different to where the damp patch is, so always make sure you’re checking for leaks all over the property, and not just looking at the area of wetness or puddle.

If your roof tile has cracks or breaks in it, water can seep through these gaps and then onto other tiles, leading to further roofing issues.

If you are unsure where a leak is coming from, get a professional roofing company to carry out a survey.

Avoid removing tiles to replace broken ones

It might seem obvious, but removing a complete roof tile from one area and using it to replace a cracked tile will only lead to more issues with your roofing.

This could leave a different area of your property exposed to water damage when it is quick and easy to find a replacement tile. If you need to replace a tile, make sure you source the same type of tile as close to the original as possible from Recycling Roof Tiles.

Our experienced team will be able to match your roof tiles perfectly, and we’ll also be able to offer advice.

Brand new roof tiles can be very expensive, so source high-quality second-hand tiles to save money and ensure quality.

Avoid Dangerous DIY

Though roofing tiles are relatively tough, it is easy to make mistakes when using them and botched DIY jobs can lead to serious injuries or harm.

If you are confident completing DIY tasks such as replacing a roof tile, make sure you have all of the relevant health and safety equipment, including ladders, helmets and even scaffolding.

Never put your weight on a roof tile as it can break and this will cause the roof to leak. If you are not 100% sure about your ability, call in a professional to do the job for you or invest in some training so that you can learn how to do it safely.
